People lifters(view report contents)WAVsWAVS are Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles. Specialist firms convert MPVs, vans and other vehicles so that you can get into them and travel as a passenger in your wheelchair. You get into the vehicle using a specially fitted ramp or lift depending on the model and the conversion. Vans which have been converted are usually fitted with windows so that you can see out. Depending on vehicle, some have seats for passengers as well as a wheelchair in the rear. Some will carry more than one wheelchair. Some converters have vehicles which you can drive from your chair. A very wide range of car controls are available and can be installed as part of the conversion to make it possible for almost anyone to drive. There aren’t any mandatory standards covering conversions unless you are a Motability customer (for details click here). Also five of the larger companies have formed the Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Converters Association (WAVCA) which has a code of practice. Members of the WAVCA are Brotherwood, Constables, Gowrings, Lewis Reed and Widnes Car Centre. Here is a list of specialist conversion companies, those marked with
