Other types of equipment

This guide is about equipment which lifts you into a car. Other types of equipment which might help include:

Swivel seats which move out of the car but do not move up and down. 90º types slide out over the door sill. 180º versions slide out and turn to face the rear, which makes for an easier transfer from a wheelchair. If you are agile a swivel cushion may be enough.

Devices which help you stand up. You slide onto a narrow seat fitted between the car seat and the car door. They lower or raise by power.

Boards to help slide on and off the seat. There are various designs for wheelchair users.

The new Handy Slider from Mangar is for people who can stand. One end rests on the car seat and the other on adjustable legs which stand on the ground outside the car. £95 from Mangar.

For more information on all this equipment, contact a Mobility Centre or adaptation firm, and see Ricability's guide Ins and outs of choosing a car.
