  • the front car seat is replaced with the wheelchair mounting brackets

  • the chair is backed into place beside the car door. This has to be done fairly precisely
the chair is manoeuvred into place
  • a crank handle on the chair is used to get to the right height so that the chair clicks onto the fitting in the car. A powered version is available to do this

Testers found it easy to use, comfortable and felt safe in it. It was thought to be well designed with no serious drawbacks. You only need to bend your head and neck if you are very tall.

Some had problems lifting their feet over the sill. One lever was near your left leg and some people disliked helpers reaching over to operate it. It did not restrict room for rear passengers. Helpers had to be strong enough to lift the wheels (14kg) and had to be able to reach low enough to reach levers near the ground.

The Carony frame is bolted to
the floor and can be removed fairly easily if the car seat needs to be
put back.

Options and prices

The manual model, which is pushed by a helper, costs from £2,800 (+£200 for 24” rather than 12” wheels). The powered wheelchair version costs from £7,880.

You can combine this system with the Turney (see page 8) for use on high-floored vehicles – around £1,500.
