Getting a wheelchair into a car (view report contents)

What to Look for Checklist

Your car

  • can the hoist be fitted to your car? Some fit only certain types of vehicle and it can be difficult to fit a hoist to some models

  • does the hoist leave enough space to carry luggage when you are not carrying a wheelchair?

  • check the size of the boot or hatch. You may have to fold the chair or dismantle it more than would be necessary in a larger vehicle

  • is the arm long enough? Short arms can mean that the chair dangles too near the car bodywork and can graze it unless you can reach and guide the wheelchair in by hand.

Your wheelchair or scooter

  • is the hoist strong enough to lift it?
  • For powered wheelchairs and scooters, don't forget to include the weight of the heaviest batteries you'll be using

  • is the chair easy enough to fold or dismantle?

The hoist

  • how easy is it to use?

  • can it be fitted to the side of the car which would suit you best?

  • are the controls in the right place and easy for you to work?

  • does the shape of the hooks and the method of hooking on suit you?

  • if you remove the hoist’s arm, is it light and easy enough for you?

Your abilities

  • do you have enough strength and dexterity, even on a bad day?
