Getting a wheelchair into a car (view report contents)

Buying guide

If you drive and want to travel independently you can use any hoist that fits your car and is strong enough to lift your wheelchair or scooter. You need to have enough strength and dexterity to operate it and need to be able to walk round the car and get into the driving seat. Use the What to look for checklist and the summaries to help find a hoist that suits you.

If you can’t walk around the car and if you have a folding manual chair, consider a hoist which allows you to transfer into the car before stowing your chair – either a rooftop hoist , or one you can use to put a wheelchair into the back seat area, or even into the boot (see Transferring first section).
