Seating
Sitting in the right position is the key to safe and comfortable driving
so consider your seating position first. It may be that the existing car
seat suits you, particularly if it has a range of adjustments. Check you
have good all round vision, that the steering wheel is in the right position
and you can reach the controls. If not consider:
Cushions. These provide better comfort and change the
shape of the seat - for example to give you a more upright posture or
support the small of the back.
Seat adaptations. Some can be raised, made to slide further
in the car, or swivel out of the car.
Replacement seats. These include seats that move right
out of the car, and seats with useful features, such as:
- a choice of shapes and adjustability
- adjustable lumbar support
- extensions to give leg support
- suspension to reduce vibration
- built in heating
- ventilation so that clothes and the seat keep dry
- powered controls.
From adaptation firms and specialist dealers. Cushions cost mostly £20-£80;
a wide range of seats from £400 - £3,000+.
