Taking Control - A guide to buying or upgrading central heating controls(view report contents)

How to buy central heating controls

If you're having central heating installed, the controls will be part of the package. You will need to tell the installer what features you want. The information here should help you discuss your options. Ask if you can see and handle a selection of controls before making your final decision.

If you're making changes to your central heating it also makes sense to think about changing controls at the same time if they're hard to use. See How to save money by choosing and using your central heating carefully.

You can buy controls yourself. They’re sold in DIY shops, plumbers’ suppliers and other specialists (look under central heating equipment and plumbers’ merchants in a classified telephone book). You should be able to see a selection in any of these places. Do not try to install them yourself unless you know what you’re doing!

For information about individual controls, ask the manufacturer for a catalogue (see Manufacturers contact details). These are available in print and online if you have access to the Internet. If you ask, Danfoss Randall and Honeywell can supply some controls in braille or with tactile markers.
