Making your kitchen easier to use (view report contents)

Eat, drink and be comfy

If possible, set aside some space for having meals so you don’t have to carry heavy dishes and hot plates further than necessary. If you go for a breakfast bar rather than a table, make sure it can be fitted at a height that suits you. Check that the table or bar is stable and, if possible, has rounded corners.

B&Q Fantasy

If you’re partially sighted, choose a finish that is non-reflective.

If you find it difficult to stand up or need to sit down to work in the kitchen, you’ll need a chair or stool that is stable and will give good support. Stools and chairs with splayed legs are the most stable.

A backrest will give you support and help with balance, and armrests will help you stand. You may find that a stool with a sloping seat is easier to get out of. You can adjust the height of some stools. Check that the chair or stool is light enough and is shaped to make it easy for you to move it around the kitchen.
