Holding on

Grab rails help you get up or down, move from one position to another, or just keep steady. They come in different shapes and can be made to measure. Some fold out of the way. They cost from around £5 for a simple handle to over £40 for larger frames such as those which go round the toilet, or £60+ for adjustable, foldaway types. Most rails are white, but some come in other colours.

If you just need to steady yourself, a rail which goes around the taps may be all you need. They are hinged to fold up out of the way of other people. They will not help you get up from the bottom of the bath, nor are they meant to take all your weight.

If you need more support, consider a rail fixed along the wall. If you need to hold on with both hands as you step in, fit one on the outside edge of the bath too. Bear in mind that outside rails may get in the way of the bath boards described on the next page and that they give you less room to get into the bath.

Non slip bath mats fit into the bottom of the bath (around £6).

  • Don’t put your weight on fittings such as a toilet roll holder, towel rail or basin.
  • Choose rails or handles which are easy to grip. Most people prefer rails between 3 - 4.5cm wide. Wood or plastic are warmer to touch than metal. Avoid smooth rails which get slippery when wet.
  • Put handles or rails wherever you need them. Make sure they are very firmly fixed. They need to be strong enough to take your weight and cope with tugging. Consult a builder, particularly if you have cavity walls.
