Choosing a vacuum cleaner that's easy to use
Quick check list for vacuum cleaners
This is a quick checklist of the important points to think about when
choosing a vacuum cleaner, especially important if you are looking at
a model we have not tested.
- Upright or Cylinder machine
- Uprights are good for wider flatter spaces
- Cylinders are easier for homes with steps and stairs
- Uprights need less strength to push
- Cylinder tubing only needs to be assembled once
- Uprights can give support if you have walking difficulties
- Cylinders may need some strength to assemble tubing
- How heavy is the machine? This will be important if you have limited
strength
- Check handles for comfort and see if they allow two hands if necessary
- Look at the cord, does it rewind automatically, if not is it fiddly
to do?
- Check to see how much strength is needed to assemble tubing on both
the upright and cylinder machines
- Look at the storage space for tools, how easy are they to get in and
out?
- Are the controls easy to see and use, how much force do they need
to operate?
- Can the cleaning head be changed easily from carpet to hard floor?
- Look carefully at the dust container and the filter
- Does the bag need emptying or replacing?
- Is it a filterless system or does that need changing too?
- How easy is it to get access to the bag?
- How easy is it to get access to the filter?
- How much strength do you need to change the bag or the filter?
