Choosing a tumble drier that's easy to use (view report contents)

Introduction

A tumble drier can be a real labour saver. It will dry laundry loaded straight from the washing machine, without the need to carry the load and hang it. How easy wash day will be will depend on the design of the model you choose. We report on 13 tumble driers - on their ease of use for people with restricted mobility, reduced strength, limited or painful grip or reach and those with a visual impairment.

Different types of tumble drier work in different ways. If you know exactly what sort of drier you want, you can go straight to the Buying Guide which recommends models we found generally easy to use. If you’d like more information, look at drier types.

Many of the tumble driers tested had a mixture of good and bad features for elderly people and people with disabilities. Click here for advice on finding an easy to use drier if you want one which is particularly good for someone with restricted mobility, poor sight or poor grip, for example. This should also be useful if you’re looking at other driers in the shops.

You can also browse through full test results for each of the driers tested, including what convenience features they had, how well they worked and how easy people with disabilities would find them to use.

There are also Ricability ease of use guides on a range of other domestic appliances. Check out our full publications list. This site also has links to other organisations who may be able to help with buying or using appliances or adapting them for special needs.
