Choosing a tumble drier that's easy to use (view report contents)

Guide to types of tumble driers

Your choice of tumble drier will depend on the layout of your home. This is because different types work in different ways.

Air vented
Air vented driers should be used near an external wall. Some can be wheeled (see the Summaries). The warm, damp air from the washing vents through a hose fitted to the drier and through a window, or the drier can be permanently installed to a vent through a wall.

Creda 37382

The bar grip on the White Knight condenser and compact driers was shallower than some others.

Condenser

Condenser models cool the damp air inside and it collects in a water container. This should be emptied after each use, or with some models the water can be piped straight down a drain.

Creda condenser drier

The bar grip on the White Knight condenser and compact driers was shallower than some others.

Compact

To save space you might have a full-size tumble drier fitted on a washing machine. The Summaries show which models could be stacked and gives prices for the kit needed to do this. A compact model is an alternative, and can be wall hung (see Summaries). It will dry less laundry at a time and take longer than a full-size machine.

Programmable

Some driers can be programmed to monitor the moisture in the laundry, and switch off when it is as dry as you have pre-set. None was tested for this guide. The Creda condenser drier had one you could select, but these machines were not programmable.

Gas powered

These driers use gas to heat the air that dries the laundry. They are more expensive to buy and have installed than a standard air vented drier, but they are cheaper to run. No gas driers have been tested for this report.
