Choosing a toaster that's easy to use (view report contents)

Quick checklist for buying a toaster

  • First of all, decide what size of toaster you want.
  • Look at the features available
    • Do you just want it for toast or for other things?
    • Do you want features such as reheat or frozen bread?
  • Look at the controls, particularly the browning control and the loading control.
    • If you have poor or painful grip:
      • Do they protrude well from the body of the toaster?
      • Do they have a raised edge for gripping?
      • Do you need much strength to use them?
    • If you have poor sight:
      • Is the labelling of the controls large and clear?
      • Does the labelling contrast well with the colour of the toaster?
      • Do the controls protrude enough to feel them?
  • Look at safety:
    • Does the body of the toaster get hot?
    • Does the toast lift well clear of the loading slots?
  • Check the crumb tray, is it easy to clean or does it need to be opened with a coin or screwdriver?
  • Does the toaster slide on the kitchen surface?
  • Is the cord storage easy to use and will it stay in place?
