Bath boards and seats (1999) (view report contents)Help with moneyBenefitsThe benefits system is very complicated. If you have a disability you can find out if there is anything you are entitled to from the Benefits Agency or your local social security office. There is a free Benefit enquiry line for disabled people and their carers on 0800 882200 (0800 22067 in Northern Ireland) If you are disabled and have a low income and need to make structural alterations to your bathroom to make it possible for you to use it, you may be able to get a grant towards the cost. Ask your social services department or the renovations grants section of your local authority for details. Grants from other organisationsSome organisations for people with particular disabilities give grants if you can’t afford equipment you need. Your library will have directories which cover these funds. If you’re elderly Charity Search can point you towards other charities which may be able to help you with money or in other ways. Citizens Advice Bureaux VATYou don’t have to pay VAT on products which are designed solely for disabled people. There’s also no VAT to pay on installation and some building costs as long as these are changes solely for the benefit of a disabled person. Simply declare your disability in writing when you buy the goods. Most suppliers will give you a form to make this easy. See VAT leaflet 701/7/94 from your nearest Customs and Excise Office. For these tests, 10 people tried each of the boards and seats for a week, and the features of each were then assessed by expert therapists.
