Who can help? - key sources of information for older and disabled people (view report contents)Introduction
We all need information every day. As we get older we need more. It comes as a surprise to most of us that there are many thousands of organisations - large and small - which have been set up to give information. Some of them are very specialised and some give general advice. But what they have in common is that they are there to help. They know their subjects. They can give you the facts. Even more importantly they can tell you about the ways other people in similar situations have tackled similar problems. At Ricability we know that many people have not tapped into this huge store of help for the simple reason that they don’t know who does what. This is where this guide comes in. We can’t cover everything, but we can tell you who can give you information or help on being independent and staying in your own home. And if you want information on things we haven’t covered see ‘More information and advice’ section. Use the guide to find out who to contact on a particular problem. Or read through it for ideas - for example on making your home easier to live in, or on ways of getting out of the house. Note: this guide covers services in England, Scotland and Wales - it does not cover Northern Ireland. AcknowledgmentsWe would like to thank British Gas and Scottish Gas for providing funding for this guide. We are also grateful to the National Information Forum for consultancy.
