Children’s continence products - A guide for parents
and children (view
report contents)
What’s this guide about?
Please note this guide was published in 2001, however contact details
have been updated where possible and for up-to-date product information
see the PromoCon in the section
Useful Information.
Children with special physical or learning needs often struggle to achieve
bladder and bowel control. Conditions such as cerebral palsy can make
undressing and getting to the toilet difficult. Others, such as spina
bifida, directly affect the bladder and bowel. Whatever the cause, this
part of daily life can be frustrating, exhausting and distressing for
you and your child and products can be expensive.
It is important that your child’s problem is investigated so that cures
or management can be started early - see Where
can you get help? section. This guide tells you about the many products
designed to help. As well as body-worn pads and special underwear, it
describes equipment for using in and out of the loo, materials for protecting
the bed, and special products to be used only with medical advice.
Tips are given on choosing and using products, how and where to get them,
and there are some useful addresses and telephone numbers at the end of
the guide.
