Children’s continence products - A guide for parents and children (view report contents)

What can the products do?

Continence products are not a cure and may not be a complete solution. However, they will make a huge difference to you and your child - when chosen and used carefully. It is worth asking yourself what you want the product to do before deciding which type to try or buy. Children with special needs can often achieve total or partial bladder and bowel control with the aid of equipment and training. Some bladder and bowel conditions can be managed with specialised products.

Some physical needs and lifestyle factors may affect which products your child needs e.g:

  • needs help with personal care?
  • problems with balance and movement?
  • independent and active?
  • living at home, attending school, travelling away on holiday?

Greater independence for Holly

Holly and her mum

Holly has cerebral palsy so she can’t control her arms and legs very well. Julie, her mother, says "The harness fitted to her loo chair has given Holly independence, privacy and dignity."

Quick and private for Lucy

 Lucy

Eleven year old Lucy has been catheterising herself since before she was three and now it’s second nature. Lucy says "It just takes a few minutes a day, done in private. Its brilliant because it gives me total independence and none of the children at school know about it."
