Smells and stains
Children with bladder and bowel problems can be self-conscious about
smells and stains. They are often vulnerable to bullying and abuse and
can become isolated.

Storage container for used pads prevents smells
Tips
- Soak wet or soiled bedding and clothing or wash immediately. Solid
matter should be flushed down the loo.
- Wash and dry between the legs each time a pad or appliance is changed.
This helps the skin to keep fresh. Large changing mats are available.
- Do not flush used pads down the loo. Place them in a disposal unit
or in a plastic bag to go out with the household waste.
- Spilt urine on floor or furnishings is best mopped up immediately
with kitchen paper and the area washed with a mild detergent or disinfectant
and dried quickly - a hairdryer can speed-up the drying.
- Stains on chairs and carpets can be gently scrubbed with a biological
powder or liquid. Persistent stains may require professional cleaning.
- Products which neutralise smells are available as sprays, gels, carpet
powder and drops in most supermarkets and chemists.
