Volume markings

It was not always possible to see the volume markings clearly - a problem if you make up the feed in the bottles.

Examples of volume markings

Good volume markings on the left, the rest are poor.

Markings to look for

  • Divisions marked as clear lines
  • Not too many divisions, just the important ones (particularly ounces)
  • A straight line down the middle between the ounce and millilitre divisions
  • Large, solid print in a dark colour on a clear or very slightly tinted bottle.

Markings to avoid

  • Dots, triangles or other symbols for the volume divisions
  • Embossed markings only
  • Pale and red or green print
  • Grey print on darker tinted bottles
  • Decorations on the bottles which can get in the way of the volume markings.

Not all the bottles had ounces marked on them yet powdered milk packs instruct one scoop to an ounce of water. Measures in millilitres varied from make to make.
