Soft back carriers
These can be structured carriers worn like a rucksack – an option with some front carriers,
or a sling worn across your back. Likely to be lighter than framed carriers so worth considering if
weight is all important to you.
PROS
- lighter than framed carriers
- take up less storage space
- you make be able to sit on seats with backs but must take care not to squash the baby
CONS
- baby has to be lifted high to get him or her into the carrier
- very likely to need help getting the baby in and out
- bending forward is a problem
- baby rides lower down your back so a pull on shoulders, neck and back and probably not
comfortable for long walks
- baby may be able to pull your hair, kick your back and shoplift from convenient height shelves
- baby likely to outgrow quicker than a framed back carrier
- not suitable for wheelchair users
LOOK FOR
- padded shoulder straps
- a padded waist strap to lift the weight from your shoulders
- a chest strap to stop shoulder straps slipping down
- even weight distribution so your balance is least affected
- straps or a harness to keep the baby secure
