Soft back carriers

These can be structured carriers worn like a rucksack – an option with some front carriers, or a sling worn across your back. Likely to be lighter than framed carriers so worth considering if weight is all important to you.

PROS

  • lighter than framed carriers
  • take up less storage space
  • you make be able to sit on seats with backs but must take care not to squash the baby

CONS

  • baby has to be lifted high to get him or her into the carrier
  • very likely to need help getting the baby in and out
  • bending forward is a problem
  • baby rides lower down your back so a pull on shoulders, neck and back and probably not comfortable for long walks
  • baby may be able to pull your hair, kick your back and shoplift from convenient height shelves
  • baby likely to outgrow quicker than a framed back carrier
  • not suitable for wheelchair users

LOOK FOR

  • padded shoulder straps
  • a padded waist strap to lift the weight from your shoulders
  • a chest strap to stop shoulder straps slipping down
  • even weight distribution so your balance is least affected
  • straps or a harness to keep the baby secure

‘Baby was miserable during the time taken to put him in the carrier’.
