Types of pushchair
Travel system

Around £150 to £450.
These are fully reclining, mostly forward-facing pushchairs with a separate
rear-facing car seat. Both are suitable from birth with the car seats
mostly for babies up to 13kg (29lbs) – to around a year. The car
seats have a carrying handle and off the wheels can be used as a low baby
seat or rocker. Models vary in how they fold (as with two- and three-in-ones)
and in how the car seat fits in a car - mostly on a base (included or
at extra cost) that fits different cars and is secured by the car seat
belt. Generally pushchair seat covers, removable hood and apron are included
and rain cover is sold as an extra
Pros
- you get a pushchair and car seat, both suitable from
birth
- you can transfer the baby from car to pushchair and
vice versa without disturbing and re-strapping the baby
- many models have medium size wheels and suspension
to give a smooth ride
- swivel wheels on most models – good for manoeuvring
- many models have adjustable height handles
- generally have good size shopping carrier below the
seat
Cons
- young babies must not be in a sitting position in the
car seat too long – they need to lie flat most of the time
limits your choice of car seat
- you must check the car seat can be fitted in your
car
- you will need to buy another car seat by the time
the baby reaches 13kg, or possibly before baby and car seat are a weight
to transfer together
- models vary in how easily they can be fitted to the
wheels and to the car
- folding can be complex and require good dexterity
and strength
- relatively expensive to buy
