Types of pushchair

Buggy

BuggyBuggy

Most around £20 to £100.

Also called a stroller, this is the most basic, lightweight pushchair with little if any padding. They fold into a long, narrow shape – called an umbrella fold and most have two separate handles. The child faces forward. Some do not recline so they should not be used until your baby can sit without support – usually from between six and nine months. Most others have different seat positions so can be used from three months. Seat cover, hood and rain cover are available as extras with some models.

Pros

  • light to push and to carry folded
  • simple to fold
  • small to carry and to store
  • can be carried hooked over one arm or on a strap over your shoulder
  • good for getting around confined spaces and on public transport
  • good for tough toddlers who do not want fussy, babyish covers
  • relatively cheap to buy

Cons

  • very few models are suitable from birth
  • the most basic have just one seat position
  • the most basic are hard to steer – they don’t have swivel wheels
  • not much padding in the seat
  • no suspension so they give a bumpier ride than other types
  • most models have separate handles so are not good for pushing or pulling one handed
  • they provide little support for a parent with walking difficulties
  • there is not much under-seat shopping space
